About WildPick Reviews

We test gear so you can trust what you buy.

Our Story

WildPick Reviews started in 2022 when our founder, Marcus, came back from a three-week section hike of the Colorado Trail frustrated. He'd spent hundreds of dollars on a headlamp that died in cold temps, a sleeping pad that deflated by night two, and a pack that bruised his hips by day four — all products with glowing reviews online.

The problem wasn't that the gear was universally bad. It was that most reviews were written by people who'd used the gear for a weekend, in mild conditions, on flat trails. Marcus wanted reviews from people who pushed gear hard, in real situations, over extended trips.

So he started writing them. A few friends joined. The site grew. And WildPick Reviews became what it is today: a small, independent team of outdoor enthusiasts who genuinely love testing gear and hate bad buying experiences.

We're not sponsored by manufacturers. We're not a marketing site dressed up as a review site. We buy gear, use gear, abuse gear, and then tell you exactly what happened.

Our Testing Methodology

Every review on WildPick follows a structured process:

  1. 1Purchase or source the product — We buy most gear ourselves. Occasionally manufacturers send samples, which we disclose clearly and which never influence our scores.
  2. 2Lab baseline — Before field testing, we document weight, dimensions, and any measurable specs to verify manufacturer claims.
  3. 3Field testing — Minimum of 2 overnight trips per product, with at least one in challenging conditions (weather, temperature extremes, heavy mileage).
  4. 4Scoring — We score Performance, Build Quality, Weight, Value, and Ease of Use on a 10-point scale. The overall score is a weighted average.
  5. 5Long-term follow-up — We revisit reviews after 6–12 months of use to update for durability and any new issues that emerge over time.

Our Affiliate Relationship

WildPick Reviews participates in affiliate programs, primarily Amazon Associates. When you click a link to buy a product we recommend, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps keep the site running and independent.

Our affiliate relationships do not influence which products we review or how we score them. A product we hate won't get a better score because it pays higher commissions. If anything, our commission comes only when we've genuinely convinced you something is worth buying — so it's in our interest to be honest.
